Törggelen

Törggelen is a centuries-old South Tyrolean tradition, born at the end of the grape harvest; this is how it was and still is today.
Everyone who contributed to the grape harvest was invited to a 'Marende', a gathering of farmers and employees, friends and family, where the new wine was tasted and chestnuts and typical South Tyrolean dishes were brought to the table.
The term 'Törggelen' goes back to the Latin word 'torquere', meaning 'to press'.

The name derives from 'Torrgl', the place where the grapes from the grape harvest were pressed with a press.

There are many hypotheses about the origin of the traditional festival, but wherever it comes from, traditional Törggelen is still celebrated in autumn with friends and family.
