Saint Nicholas in South Tyrol (5th December - 10th December 2023)
Spirits, myths and legends: This is the Advent season in South Tyrol.
In German and South Tyrolean tradition, St Nicholas is accompanied during the procession by mythological figures known as Krampus. According to tradition and local legends, the Krampus are servants of the devil (called 'Toifl' in South Tyrolean dialect) disguised to accompany St Nicholas during processions through the streets of the villages dedicated to him.
Every year, between the end of November and mid-December, St Nicholas and the South Tyrolean Krampus parade together through the streets, rewarding the good children and 'punishing' the bad ones, announcing their arrival with cowbells, chains, animal skins and large, creepy masks with horns.
Over the course of time, this custom has become an attraction for young and old alike, and every year it turns into a great festival where history, tradition and culture come together.
